Client Experience

Of which business achievements are you most proud?

I started a small web development business in the mid-90s. Back then, the Internet was so new that most people hadn’t heard of it. (Can you imagine?) So selling our services was rather challenging. We had to begin with a primer on what the Internet was and we had to lug around full-size computers, complete with bulky CRT monitors, to present our designs. This experience forced me to hone my ability to clearly explain technical concepts to non-tech savvy individuals, which helped close several deals, including The Philadelphia Tribune, the oldest African-American newspaper in the country.

What do you find most fulfilling about your work?

I love collaborating with a group of talented professionals who are good at what they do because it challenges me to always be “on point” and, at the same time, gives me an opportunity to learn. In those situations, the adage “we are smarter than me” rings true because no one person knows everything.

How do you hold it together when things get stressful?

Meditation. Stress affects everyone differently, but in many cases, the heart rate increases, breathing becomes shallow and muscles get tense. When I feel stressed, I make time to focus on my breathing and relax my body. A few minutes of deep, conscious breathing usually works wonders on the mind and body.

How have your roots contributed to who you are today?

My mom raised two kids by herself while working a full-time and a part-time job. She often sacrificed things she wanted or needed for herself to provide for me and my sister. By watching her, I learned the importance of a strong work ethic, perseverance and the resourcefulness needed to overcome obstacles and deliver when others are depending on you.

What activities do you enjoy?

• Just about anything athletic, but specifically, running, biking, bowling and yoga.
• Acting on stage and on camera.
• Performing stand-up comedy.

Your favorite motto, quote, saying?
