Client Experience

Of which business achievements are you most proud?

Making the transition from a traditional illustrator and comp artist to interactive development—I saw some of my marker comp business beginning to trail off as Photoshop and stock photo houses became more prevalent, so I let go of half my client base, bought a computer and started to teach myself. As a freelancer, eliminating a good portion of my safety net was quite motivating.

What do you find most fulfilling about your work?

I love problem solving. Uncovering a new approach to accomplish a goal is very gratifying.

What traits help you succeed?

I am a very stubborn person. I stick with a problem until a solution is found—but not so stubborn that I won’t seek advice when needed.

How do you hold it together when things get stressful?

When I am stressed, I like to get physically exhausted. Working on the house, working out—whatever.

How have your roots contributed to who you are today?

I grew up in Avon Lake, a town just west of Cleveland, Ohio. Most of my time as a kid was spent running around playing in the woods or fishing. If I wasn’t outside, you could usually find me drawing in front of the TV. With all the opportunity I had to get into trouble, my parents somehow managed to keep me in line and encouraged me. My parents, above all, have made me who I am today. (This is intended as a compliment—not an indictment.)

What activities do you enjoy?

  • Spending time with my family—hiking, camping or just hanging out
  • Drawing and painting
  • Fixing up a very tired house

    Your favorite motto, quote, saying?

It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not deserve them.

What are your goals for your life?

What could be better than the ability to support and raise my family doing what I enjoy?

What is the most important legacy you hope to leave?

To be remembered fondly by family and friends. As for my daughters, I hope to leave them well-grounded, strong, self-reliant people with an unshakable sense of right and wrong.
